Over the last couple of weeks, the remote locking and unlocking of my 2002 TDI Gal, has been very hit and miss

Sometimes i can open and unlock with the key fob no problems, and other times it will open but not unlcok and vice versa

If i can't use the remote, i can still manually lock/unlock the car using the key

I had the battery in the key fob changed at Frauds thinking this was the problem, but nothing has changed

Is this a known problem, and if so what is the solution for fixing :)

Thanks again

Dave

Hi all,

just started having this problem with mine seems no common ground sometimes it works sometimes it dont .

New battery in key fob no difference. Does the reciever in the car have an antenna can it break or is the key finally broken

any help appreciated :(

Posted (edited)

AFAIK the antenna's are at the centre top of the front and rear screens. This is the best place to aim the key.

As a point of interest: it seems that if you are up to about 50 feet from your car and point the key at your head whilst looking at the car - while pressing the lock/unlock it works. Try it before you laugh - and thats from Jeremy Clark :(

I think this is a hold over from the days when it was IrD, when we discussed this before I think the consensus was that the manual for this hadnt been rewitten or that being non-directional it didn't matter. Looking at the components for the central locking on the mk2 (Sharan) there is no separate antenna - it could be that the wiring is the antenna somewhere on the forum there is a diagram showing the central locking components for a LHD sharan.

Does the MkII fob have one or two batteries?

I recall someone posting that the problem was gunked up buttons inside the fob. Requires a careful strip down (not losing that dreaded immobiliser chip!) and some electrical (or brake) cleaner and a small brush to clean the body wax/chip grease/corrosion away. Don't ask me how all that crap gets into your key, all I know is that it does and the same applies to TV remotes etc - when they stop working properly and the battery makes no difference then its time to strip the keypad and wash the grease off!

hi i recently reprogrammed after it wasnt working it now works but only unlocks i know that it is getting the signal as whn you hold it down it sends the windows down and when you hold locking button i sends tem up could this be a control box issue?

I would investigate the wires in the rubber boots between the doors and body - see items 31 and 43 in the faq shorts or breaks in these can cause allsorts of problems - start with the drivers door

Hello,

I too am having this hit miss affair with remote locking/unlocking.

Something I have never been completely sure of reading through the posts on this subject, by simply replacing the battery in the key fob does it then need to be re-programmed?

It depends on how quickly you do it

Hi Nikpv,

Was that a serious answer or am I missing something?, I know on some remotes, by changing the battery or changing one at a time, it will keep the programing.

sorry it was completely serious - I think you have to change them wthin 30-45 secs but of course I may be thinking about some other remote control but I doubt it

remember its only the remote locking that would be affeced - the pats chip does not need external power..

I only put the smilies in because its just the sort of job that alays seems to go wrong, there you are everything ready, you pop the batteries and as the new one(s) go in you drop one, by the time you have found it again (20secs gone) you cant quite remember which way round it should be so you double check (now at 35sec), the kids come charging past and the 4 year old wants to fiddle so you tell them to get off fending little fingers away, youngest starts crying telling you that you are mean, along comes SWMBO wanting to know what you've done to upset the kids. You get the thing back together (50sec) - go and check it .... nope need to reprogram so you search for your manual as usual you cant find it so fier up the computer and have a look at the forum and you find that maz has borked the whole thing and it doesn't work......

such a simple little job ...

(oh and by the way in all the rumpus you have dropped the pats chip which the eldest has superglued to her latest collage .....)

Yup, that's my house hold, down to a T., thanks Nikpv.

I have another question about keys but I want to post a photo but can't because my lot have grabbed the digis and are about to be grounded for life unless I get one back quick.

(Know this is an old post, but worth a try!)

I have the same problem with my MKII Galaxy. The remote was erratic. So I changed the batteries. It then went to *nearly* not working, but 1 time in 50 (yes I keep trying!) it will unlock, but never lock. I have looked at posts about reprograming, but these seem to be for a MK I (either way tried and it didn't work). Would getting a new fob work? if so how could I program it?

many thanks

I'm glad someone else resurrected this thread

I've the same problem with a MK1 Alhambra, the wifes key works perfectly where as mine only works when the key is almost in the barrel.

I changed the batteries in both keys when I got the car as a matter of course, hers will work from about 30ft away, mine used to work from about 10ft then got steadily worse

So whats the answer? do I get a new fob or send it to Fraud.

I don't really want spend money at Fraud again.

I've already had the batteries changed at fraud and it worked okay for a week. Now it work 1 in 30 times. Could the fob it is worn out

Any ideas.

I had the same problem - I fixed mine this way:

1. Take the batteries/seperator plate out - make sure not to lose the PATS chip, do it on a table so if it drops out you can find it!

2. Use pcb cleaner or other solvent based cleaner (I used brake & clutch cleaner) on a qtip to clean all the battery connections well, particularly the points of contact.

3. Clean the soldered area on the pcb where the triple battery contact makes its connection. (if the pcb solder is worn away exposing the copper, this may require resoldering - mine didnt look too bad so I didnt do this)

4. Retension the spring contacts a little using a screwdriver (don't go mad though!) -

5. Clean the batteries and seperator plate with solvent and replace, trying not to touch the mating surfaces with your fingers

6. Reassemble

If the fob still doesnt work 100%, then what I also did as part of my investigation was

7. Remove the pcb from the fob - this is quite fiddly so only attempt this if you're sure you are capable. First "unsquash" the pcb mounting lugs as best you can with small long nose pliers. Then carefully prise up the pcb with a small screwdriver near one lug - with luck, it should pop out. Repeat with second lug.

8. clean both side of pcb with cleaner (spray), particularly the pcb switches

9. Then I added two small pieces of waxed/plastic coated (i.e. waterproof) paper over the pcb switches to act as a shim

10. carefully reassemble - there should be no need to "squash" the mounting lugs if the pcb "clicks back in"......

And now I have a 100% reliable fob (for the time being anyway) :)

I had a problem with my remote locking/unlocking very hit'n'miss.

Previously I tried reprogramming it, cleaning the fob interior - nothing seemed to work.

Took it to Fraud - they changed the battery (still hit'n'miss).

I must have opened the fob about 15 times to check connection to the battery and connectivity, reprogramming.

I FIXED IT LAST NIGHT. THE FOB HAD 2 PROBLEM

1) I re-soldered the point where the battery connections met the pcb. I suspect the battery had been making a loose connection with the pcb, resulting in wear on the board. I put a blob of solder and sanded it smooth.

2) Because the above problem, the previous owner though by pressing harder on the remote it may work. The result of this was it caused a crack in the solder from the on/off button to the pcb. I resoldered the point of contact.

Now the fob works 100%
